Travel Guide

Top Airport Activities

I love airports. No, I truly do. Really. The majority of the population (I have found) do not like and have a distaste for the waiting and the boring hum-drum of the airport. The excitement of going some place by plane is awesome. I just love going there to pick up people. I know strange, but why else would I be a travel agent if not to love traveling. When I was a kid my Nana would take me to the local airport to watch planes take off and land, I did the same thing again as a teenager by myself or with a friend. I love all airports but some have a bit going on more than others. Here are a few great things to do at the airport if your travelling or picking up someone else:

  • Read - the newspaper or finish that novel
  • Get a flu shot- many major airports are now offering this service right after you pass through security
  • Watch the planes land and take-off - surreal
  • Talk to other people
  • Surf the net - WI-FI is available in many places or check out the internet cafe
  • Window shop at the airport mall
  • Have a drink or cup of coffee at the pub/coffee shop
  • Get a massage (limited number of airports)
  • Play a travel game
  • Talk to strangers
  • Catch up on phone calls, e-mails, etc.
  • Write a letter, catch up on correspondence
  • Write a to-do list for when you get to your destination

You can not do all of these things at every airport but once you are through security, check out the many features available to you or get a cup of coffee, read a good book and relax.

Cheap Airfare Ideas

Finding the cheapest airfare is as much an art as a science. There are nuances aplenty in this hourly-changing industry. The large travel search sites like Travelocity and Orbitz are no longer your one-stop-shop, though don’t think you should avoid them. Those larger sites should still be part of your overall strategy. You can find specials there that the faster moving and harder working little guys haven’t uncovered yet.

My general strategy for finding the best airfare is a multi-step process. It’s a filter down approach starting with the big airfare search engines, especially when I am researching destinations. If you know when you’re going but not where (like our honeymoon couples, often), then this is a great place to start. You can fairly reliably find out which destinations are running discounts for your dates by doing an Orbitz, Travelocity, Kayak or Sidestep type search, or any of the like. They are all very different; try them out and tell me your favorite! Try Farecast too - Farecast may take this segment by storm if they can work out the kinks. Add a day or two of flexibility to your search to see how much you can save (we began our honeymoon to South-East Asia on a Tuesday, rather than Sunday or Monday, and saved hundreds). Then check the airlines that you may not find in these searches, the Southwest’s and the Jet Blue’s of the world. Jet Blue is starting to appear in most of these searches finally, so check out the one you’re using. Southwest remains adamantly independent. You can often find specials directly through all the airlines’ websites too. Then look for deals through budget sites, like Travelzoo. I’ve used Travelzoo several times, but only for their hotel specials. Airfarewatchdog is unreal for truly last minute deals. They have some super insider tips too. I am not opposed to using travel agents for airfare, but you need to find a hungry one that will check several times each day, which is the frequency with which airlines change their fares.

Here’s a great way to use a travel agent for airfare: if you’re looking for cheap international travel, then try a travel agent that caters to people who live in the country to which you’re traveling. Going to China? Find a travel agent in Chinatown. These agents are basically destination-specific consolidators. Similarly, I once paid $6 o/w to fly from Sandakan to Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia (June, 2006). The only way to get that was to walk into the Air Malaysia office in Sandakan and pay in Malaysian Ringgit.

Bon Voyage!

No matter it is for a business trip, leisurely tour, or family matters, air journey may consume a very huge bite out of your budget. However, you needn’t have to worry about this. Nowadays, options are endless in order to enjoy air travel at a very cheap fare.

With the introduction of the concept budget airlines, alternatively known as low cost airlines, economical airlines, no-frills airlines, people including business travelers and leisurely travelers can now travel anywhere in the world, no matter you want to travel from Hong Kong to Europe or Hong Kong to Canada or US destinations.

Apart from these, you can enjoy traveling at low fares through a number of ways. If you are willing to do some leg work, it is definite that you can easily find an airline providing safe as well as quality budget travel.

One of the best ways to search for cheap flights is through the internet. With scores of airline sites on the web, you can easily find a budget flights with ease. These websites usually carry info on discounts they offer on international air travel as well as in-country travel. Some of the different methods through which these sites provide air travel discounts are :

Reduction of overhead - Many of the online air travel sites render international travel flights to anywhere in the world. This in turn allows to easily match customers to flights with considerably low overhead, thereby enabling service providers to offer flight travel at cheapest rates.

Advanced Bookings - Majority of the agencies provide considerable savings when you make air fare bookings online and in advance.

Off Day or Off Hour Flights - Some of the airline agencies provide great deals on airline by giving customers booking on flight which other travelers may sometimes not prefer to book

Unsold Seats - In some instances, airline companies provide great discounts in order to fill the unsold seats. Special deals may be provided to passengers making bookings prior to two days of the date of departure of the flight

Special Discounts - Many airlines have devised special programs in order to provide special discounts for potential customers making a great deal of flight bookings

Above all, these providers render discounts when you travel during a particular period of a year such as Christmas, New Year, or any other special occasions

However, a thorough investigation must be undertaken with regard to the reputability and the way they render discount flights, prior to approaching an online service provider. It is also important to ensure that they do not charge any kind of hidden fee. One can lean on such sources as references and reviews written by real users or passengers in order to locate a reputable budget airline.

Many of the airlines provide facilities for online ticket booking, which is not only safe and secure but also beneficial for hassle-free bookings. All you have to do is to just log into their website and inform them regarding the destination you are going to travel and date of departure. All of the rest they will take care.

One can also enjoy budget or discount air travel through different other ways including incentives on credit cards and through membership in some important travel clubs as well as certain organizations.

In some instances, credit card holders can enjoy cheap flights by utilizing these cards. In the case of travel clubs, they provide some kind of discounts on air travel for their members when they travel through some particular airlines. Apart from travel clubs, some reputable other organizations such as retirement clubs, college alumni organizations, and business clubs also provide their members discount air travel.

Above all, majority of the airlines render great incentive prices for air fares purchased or booked various weeks to months in advance. How big would be the discount will depend on the airline as well as how much earlier you have made bookings.

A budget airline provides almost the same superb services that a standard airline offers, such as excellent dining options, superb entertainment facilities, and comfortable as well as soft cabins. Additionally, some of the budget airlines render special services for passengers such as elderly travelers, children traveling alone or not accompanied by their parents, pregnant as well as passengers flying with infants, and passengers who have visual, speech, or hearing imparity.

Frequent Flyer Programs - All Your Questions Answered

Frequent flyer programs are the best thing to sign up for if you travel a lot for your work or you use your credit card excessively. By this I mean having a credit card which earns you frequent flyer points every time you use it.

Since you work hard for your money why not get the most of what helps you earn your money. All the examples listed below are from the Qantas Frequent Flyer program.

What is a frequent flyer program?
This is a program that is offered by airlines to reward loyal customers.

How do you earn points?
You can do this in one of two ways.

Using your Credit Card

There are many banks who offer frequent flyer credit cards. You sign up for these cards and every time you use your card to pay for something you earn points. ANZ seems to be the most popular.

Flying with a Particular Airline
Each airline has its own frequent flyer program. You sign up for a membership for example the Qantas Frequent Flyer program costs AUS$82.50. Every time you pay for a flight, quote your membership number and use that ticket you earn points.

To get a little more specific, if the fare you purchase is on sale you may not be able to earn points with it. Ask before your pay.

The points you earn are calculated by how many miles you travel e.g. 1 point for every mile you fly.

How do you use points?
Once you have accumulated points you can make a frequent flyer booking. Each destination has a value associated with it.

e.g. A Qantas flight in business class from Sydney to Melbourne is 32,000 points per person return. Halve that for an economy fare.

If you have accumulated this many points you can make a frequent flyer booking.

The flights unfortunately are not free. You need to pay for taxes too. You can choose whether you would like to use your points to pay for your taxes, which will cost much more or you can use your credit card to pay for them.

It still comes out much cheaper than buying a full fare commercially.

Otherwise you can just pop into your closest Qantas travel centre where you can pay for the taxes with cash.

Status Levels

The more you fly, the more points you earn and the higher your status level. The higher the level the better the benefits.

You can only go up in status levels by flying as it is calculated by the miles you have flown. This is a thank-you from the airline for flying with them and their partners. With Qantas you can earn points and redeem points with Jetstar as well.

So let us talk about these wonderful benefits. To make changes to frequent flyer bookings you need to pay points. As a status member you pay NO point fees for changes to date and time.

Normally it is 2500 points per person to make a change but you don’t pay this fee. If you change class or destination then you pay a 5000 point fee per person. This applies to everyone.

For status members there is extra availability. This means you will get a seat even if they overbook a flight. Someone else will get kicked off. Basically this guarantees you a seat no matter what.

The higher in status the more they will do for you to please you. The higher in status the more personalized the service as they have specific people who will bend over backwards to help you.

Also you need to give 24hrs notice to make a booking. You can’t make a booking today to fly out today unless it is an emergency. If it is an emergency then you need to provide doctors certificates to prove it.

So there is the program and all the benefits that come with it. As long as you know the rules you will never have a problem. It’s not knowing that always causes the problems.

Qantas Status Levels are:

Gold

Silver

Platinum

Chairman’s Lounge (Invitation only)

Popular Programs:

Qantas - Frequent Flyer

Cathay Pacific - Airways Asia Miles

Singapore Airlines - KrisFlyer

British Airways - Executive Club

United Airlines - Mileage Plus

Emirates - Skywards

Air New Zealand - Air Points

Virgin Blue - Velocity

Private Jet Services and Their Benefits

Traveling on a private jet means you save time and energy. Its hassle-free and a much more productive and stress-free way to fly. It puts you in control. Private jet charter services have made it very easy for people to organize instant business trips. Especially for business tycoons, jet charter travel is of great importance. There are several advantages of hiring a private jet:

Scheduling
You are the boss here. Your aircraft would leave when you decide. The main advantage of hiring private air charter is the freedom of scheduling. You can plan out the entire schedule according to your business needs and fly at any time you want. You can also alter the schedule if required.

Time-Saver
For business community time is money. Wastage of aprecious time means loss of millions. Normally, traveling by a commercial airline lead to a great wastage of time due to delayed or cancelled flights. On the other hand with private jet charter services you save time reserving tickets, registering, making queues for security, getting the luggage etc. In short, you avoid delays and save a lot of precious time.

Size
Here you are the king. You choose the private air charter service which suits your needs. You can choose from a variety of aircrafts like light jets, midsize jets, super mids, jumbo jets or even helicopters according to your requirements, i.e. seating capacity, speed of travel, etc. Now that’s the luxury you will never get when traveling on commercial flight.

Additional Facilities
A private air charter service also ensures that you get excellent gourmet meals, ground transportation facilities and return services to make your trip convenient and memorable. You dictate the needs here. You can also demand specific items to be served on board like vegetarian meals or a certain drink.

Added Security
The most important benefit of private jet charter services is that you get a high level security. It’s hassle-free. You don’t need to stand in a queue to get through the security area. No need to worry about luggage loss. You get high level of comfort, privacy and security.

Choose your Airport
With private jets you get the facility of choosing the airport you want to land in. You can decide to land in a less crowed airport, where you can save your precious time in car and ground transportation.

A private jet charter service ensures that its customer service personnel are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to meet client’s demands. It provides corporate, executive and independent travelers with top level security, comfort, privacy and flexibility; which is not available in any other mode of transportation.

Probably that’s why more and more corporate houses are now beginning to prefer private jets charter services to regular commercial flights to ensure their people reach the right place at the right time with minimal hassles and fatigue.

Tips to Make Flying with Children a Joy

Children consider a flight in an airplane to be the pinnacle of existence. Life simply doesn’t get any better than the excitement of being in a great big metal tube, with butterflies from your stomach pushed up your throat with the force of takeoff. The opportunity to look down on clouds that you would ordinarily look up at provides a sense of wonderment that remains with people for the rest of their lives.

Parents, however, tend not to share their offspring’s unbridled joy. They know that the gauntlet of airport security checks, unruly children, piles of luggage, and lost passports was just the beginning. They still have to face a flight with little children.

In the spirit of goodwill and with due consideration to all passengers without children, airlines have come up with some proactive suggestions to limit the stress of travelling with children. Firstly, they recommend that you try to book your entire trip on one carrier. This will simplify matters should there be any complications regarding delays or connecting flights. If a connecting flight is inevitable, it is advisable to factor in an extra 30 minutes per child when calculating the minimum connection time.

Parents with small children can take advantage of priority boarding procedures. This allows them the time to get settled without being rushed and bumped by other boarding passengers. Another stress saver is the system available at many airlines that allows you to pre-book children’s meals. These meals are delicious, nutritious and are served before all other meals so that you can enjoy your meal in peace.

Many airliners provide special activity packs to keep children occupied and prevent boredom from making them a nuisance to their parents and other passengers. A well-known British company provides activity books on short haul flights that are over an hour. Activity packs are available on flights that are longer than two and a half hours.

The packs include write-and-wipe magic boards, colouring books with crayons, magazines with activities and pens, books to read, travel journals and pens, electronic games, etc. Other forms of entertainment include family movies and cartoons, a pop audio channel, and a selection of handheld console games.

An airline from the United Arab Emirates also provides a goodie bag full of toys and activities. There is a toy that teaches children about various destinations around the world. The bag also contains a book of Dr Seuss stories and an activity magazine called e-kids.

The airline caters to the special dietary requirements of children. They have designed special meal boxes that are capable of serving hot food without burning fingers. They meet stringent safety requirements, seal well and have strong handles for easy transport. The boxes are divided into three compartments. One contains the hot meal and the other two contain “favourite foods”.

Airlines are going out of their way to make flying a more pleasurable experience for adults and children alike. They aren’t motivated solely by goodwill, however, and their intentions are somewhat more commercial. They seek to impress parents with their care of children and secure their continued business. They aim to catch the children while they are young and turn them into loyal regular flyers from an early age, encouraging them to one day fly with their own children on their favourite airline.

Cheap Air Flight Tickets - What You Had Better Know

Today I’ve come to one simple decision. Taking flight on a commercial airliner is disagreeable in these days. At once, just so you recognize, I’m not picking at first-class or affronting the sizing of the coach seats. I am talking about the issue with flight times and stopovers. Remember when was the last time you had a flight to any destination? I absolutely agree with all the security standards, however the fact is that the runway is overcrowded and most of the flights are over-booked. This heats up arrivals and departures. This is why you believe while you have got excellent cheap air flight tickets, you have absolutely only bought a load of hassles. What happened to old times of taking flight and really arriving punctual as scheduled?

I spent the early nighttime on the internet. I needed over three hours to strain through a number of low-cost air ticket sites. A lot of which didn’t actually provide discount air flight tickets, and should not promote their prices as good. They are faraway from bargains! At any rate, I ended up on a website that provided the lowest priced ticket I may be able to find. However, on that point was a catch I was not ready for. You know how these sites all of the time list the ticket cost and then declare plus taxes and fees? Well a lot of them state what the taxes and fees will be, however this one didn’t. Once I clicked to order the ticket, it appended over hundred bucks for taxes and fees. That really seems like a lot. I am believing that is where they compensate for additional money they work like they are not charging you. How unbelievably lame. Nevertheless, I finished up purchasing this ticket as none of the others I could find at any lower rate. Perhaps inexpensive air flight tickets are just difficult to come by any longer.

No matter of how great of deals you can find online for cheap air flight tickets, with great care you know, you had better calculate waiting a bit longer than assumed. Though you are believable to board the aircraft not late, you are even believable to sit on the runway for a good half-hour, waiting on board to take off. This really can get frustrating. Besides, you had better expect a crowded airplane on every flight. These companies are essentially over-booking in these days in order to make less air fares and on the other hand make more money. Is this actually unexpected in the least? It is not to me! Nowadays it seems air travel is not like it wont to be.

Pakistan International Airlines

In 1947, following a series of meetings between the most wisest and far-seeing diplomats living and working in India, the world got a new country. India was divided into two separate countries-India and Pakistan. Still, that statement does not reveal the full significance of that division.

The country given the name Pakistan was originally two separate territories. One territory touched the eastern border of India, and a second territory touched the western border of India. Residents of Pakistan soon looked for a way to travel quickly from one territory to the other. Their search for a form of rapid transportation led to formation of the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA).

Today, the pilots working for the PIA do not always fly within Pakistan, and they do not always fly over India. Today the pilots working for PIA fly into and out of cities in the United States, in Canada, in the United Kingdom, in Ireland and in other parts of Europe. They also fly into and out of cities in South Asia, East Asia and the Persian Gulf region.

A flight from Pakistan to the United States can not be made in a short period of time. Such a flight takes close to 20 hours. For that reason, PIA has decided to provide its pilots with accommodations in the U.S. The PIA management has purchased the Roosevelt Hotel in New York City. PIA also owns the Scribs Hotel in Paris.

Pakistan International Airlines provides tourists around the world with better access to the most noteworthy points within Pakistan. Pakistan International Airlines offers the only non-stop flight from London to Karachi. Passengers on PIA flights also sit on planes that touch down in Lahore, in Islamabad, in Rawalpindi, in Pashawar and in Quetta.

Some PIA flights carry tourists to the starting point for a train ride in the Khyber Pass. Other PIA flights take tourists to points in northern Pakistan. A few PIA flights follow a flight plan detailed by a tourist’s specially selected travel package.

Most passengers on a PIA flight enjoy the sort of hospitality one finds throughout Pakistan. The attendants on a PIA flight are shining examples of generosity. The airplane passengers are always well fed. Passengers on a PIA flight benefit from the airline’s improved security. Since the bombings in London, flights out of the United Kingdom have had especially tight security.

PIA strives constantly to live up to its new slogan: “Come fly with us.” PIA offers an Awards Program and a Plus Program. Those who join such a program can get free tickets. They also enjoy PIA’s curbside check-in services. Even those who remain on the ground, after putting cargo on a PIA flight appreciate the services offered by PIA. They can take advantage of the cargo tracking services.

PIA wants each passenger to have a pleasant trip. PIA seeks to assure the satisfaction of each person who has secured a ticket on a PIA flight. PIA hopes that no one will forget or discount the airline’s former slogan: “Good people to fly with.”

Discount College Student Airfares - Looking For Great Bargains

When browsing online you’ll find different websites that provide discount student airfares, however that doesn’t mean just because you are a student that doesn’t result in always getting the best travel deal available. Many companies promote discounted airfares for students and a number of marvelous great deals can be found, although restrictions on things like round-trips and the number of days between the flights frequently indicates that the tickets are not meant to be used for leisure travel.

You can find several websites providing a lot of cheap prices on one-way travel student airfare tickets. Students usually look for this type of flight, because they are frequently not certain of their return plans. Several travel sites however do offer the return trip option with an open-end schedule to enable the student to establish a price for the whole trip while providing a window for the return date to be chosen at a later time.

A large number of cheap discounted airfares for college students offers lay down a minimum length of stay ranging from one month to twelve months and travel on particular airlines, while a few companies might offer an additional discount on a one-way return ticket when it is booked later. For example, if you book a one-way flight to your destination you will be allowed to receive a discount a couple of months later when you come to book a second one-way flight to get you home. There is often a period of between one and twelve months during which this discount offer can be claimed.

In the case of leisure travel there are so many better discounts to be found. For example, one round-trip flight from Cleveland to Las Vegas was recently provided on such a site at $176. However, booking through a travel site providing college student discount airfares, for the same flight you have to pay about $450.

The best deals on discount college student airfares can be seen in overseas travel where many of the cheap student international airfares have travel stay restrictions and require student identification at the time the flight is booked. This reject the ability of non-students could benefit from the discounted student airfare tickets to which they do not qualify. A lot of operators also require student Visa details if applicable and required by the attending school.

If you are getting ready for college you should be aware that a lot of low cost student discount airfares increase as college start dates approach due to the rising demand. Consequently leaving a couple of days earlier will generally offer a lower price on their ticket and will also give them an extra day to prepare for school. Although, a few school may restrict the dates when students are permitted on campus, which bounds the dates students could fly.

Flying First Class Helps Many People Fly

For a large number of people, being in the sky flying is no big deal. In fact, there are usually many people that travel from state to state; however, there are some that do travel from country to country on a daily basis. If you have a problem with flying or are a first time flyer, it is best that you learn to keep yourself calm; as much as possible. For many people that seems almost impossible; however, there are many benefits; mainly for your own safety!

In today’s society, because there is so much air travel, things have gotten out of control. Some of those things are airline personnel, airport security, as well as other passengers are all concerned about the safety on the arrival as well as departures of planes. In fact, if you are on a plane and someone even carelessly mentions the word “bomb”, the flight would probably land at the nearest airport possible, and the same for any passengers that are being uncooperative; and they would be told to leave the plane and possibly have the authorities called. That’s why being calm is so important!

Because many people are so nervous about flying, they will show various emotions; whether it is intentional or not. Many times people will show emotions when they are dissatisfied; especially on international flights because they are in the air for such a long period of time. Because of being in the air, there are only certain times that you are able to take the seatbelt off, use the restrooms, or use any kind of electronic equipment. In fact, with most airlines, you are only able to use them at certain times, and getting upset about it will only get you no where; except for maybe a trip with the local authorities! Because of that, most people prefer to be in the first class section over the regular class; as they have a little more freedom.

Because it is important to know what could happen if you can not keep yourself calm on and flight, it is most important that you know how to keep yourself calm. Even though you have to force yourself to think of happy thoughts, taking long breaths, or listening to music; it will definitely be worth it! In fact, when flying many people will bring a book, watch a movie or even sleep through the entire flight; whatever works best for them! If you can’t keep yourself out of trouble, it may change the way you think about flying for the rest of your life!
